The Accra Technical University (ATU) has officially opened the Ghana Universities Debate Championship (GUDC 2025) with a colourful and well-attended ceremony at its main auditorium.
The event brought together top universities from across the country for what promises to be a thrilling showcase of intellect, eloquence, and critical thinking.
Proceedings began with an Opening Prayer and the National Anthem, setting a solemn yet patriotic atmosphere. The Purpose of Gathering was shared, highlighting the championship’s commitment to promoting dialogue, teamwork, and the exchange of ideas among Ghana’s brightest young minds.
In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Michael Koranteng, Convener of GUDC 2025 and Coach of the ATU Debate Society, expressed joy at hosting this year’s championship. He reiterated that the initiative seeks to nurture confident and socially conscious communicators capable of shaping national discourse.

The Keynote Address was delivered by Prof. Amevi Acakpovi, Acting Vice-Chancellor of ATU, who commended the organizing committee for their hard work. He encouraged participants to see debate not merely as competition, but as a platform to develop the critical thinking and leadership skills Ghana needs for its next phase of development.

A video presentation followed, chronicling the growth and impact of the GUDC over the years. This was succeeded by a lively debate demonstration, offering the audience a glimpse of the intensity and brilliance expected in the rounds ahead.
The Chairperson for the occasion, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu, former Director of Sports at the University of Ghana, applauded ATU for hosting such a prestigious intellectual event. He urged students to uphold the values of excellence, respect, and integrity throughout the championship.

Other speakers, including Major Harrison, Head of Security, and representatives from the Accommodation and Catering Units, assured participants of a safe and comfortable stay on campus.

Dr. Martin Amoamah, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), expressed heartfelt appreciation to all partner institutions, sponsors, and volunteers whose support made the event possible.

The ceremony concluded with a Vote of Thanks and a Closing Prayer, drawing the curtain on an inspiring opening that set the tone for days of stimulating debate, camaraderie, and intellectual discovery.
