As the 2025/2026 academic year begins at Accra Technical University, many of us students have returned to campus only to meet a disappointing situation. There is currently no functioning SRC to represent us or speak for us at management sittings. At a time when important decisions are being made, the student body has been left without any voice. As a student and a writer who follows these matters closely, I felt the need to address what is really happening.

I first came across the information on The Voice of ATU platform, where an update was shared by Edmond, the former Communication Officer of the ATU SRC. According to him, the issue started after the recent SRC elections. Many people, including myself, saw this election as one of the most organized and fair processes we’ve had in years. The Electoral Commission even worked closely with management to ensure everything went smoothly. For the first time in a long while, students had confidence that their votes truly counted.

However, despite the positive feedback from the entire student body, the SRC General Secretary, who became the first runner-up, rejected the results. He has taken the matter to court, describing the election as unfair. Because of this court action, an injunction has been placed on the SRC handing-over ceremony. This means the new leaders cannot be sworn in, and the outgoing administration cannot officially leave office. Everything is on hold.

As a student, I honestly find this very frustrating. This is not the first time something like this has happened. Last year, we experienced a similar issue that caused delays and confusion in the SRC administration. Some of the same individuals involved in last year’s problems—Zack, Julius, and his running mate ShaSha—are again linked to this year’s situation. It is becoming a cycle, and it is the students who suffer the most.

This whole situation makes me ask myself a simple question: is this really about ensuring a fair process, or is it about personal interest? Are some people genuinely fighting for justice, or are they just refusing to accept defeat? At this point, students deserve honesty.

Personally, I do not like how this whole issue is being handled. Students voted. Students made their choice. And that choice should be respected. No group of individuals should block the progress of an entire university because of their own dissatisfaction. The purpose of student leadership is to serve, not to hold onto power or create confusion.

Right now, we have no SRC to speak on our behalf. No leaders attending meetings with management. No leadership to address student problems. And no structure in place to guide the new academic year. It is simply not fair to the thousands of students who depend on the SRC for support and representation.

My view as the writer is simple: it is time for the right thing to be done. The court case needs to be resolved, and the handing-over process must continue. ATU cannot move forward if the SRC is stuck in the past. Students need their leaders. Students need representation. And students need an SRC that puts their interest first.

I believe the voice of students must always stand above personal ambitions. It is time for progress, not another year of confusion.
