Accra Technical University (ATU) has officially released its grading system and classification of awards, which will guide students’ academic performance evaluations. The system is based on continuous assessment and overall performance in various courses at the end of each semester.

Grading system

Students’ raw scores (percentage marks) are converted into Letter Grades (LG) with corresponding Numerical Equivalents (NE) as follows:

  • A+ (85-100%) – Outstanding (5.00)
  • A (80-84%) – Excellent (4.50)
  • B+ (75-79%) – Very Good (4.00)
  • B (70-74%) – Good (3.50)
  • C+ (65-69%) – Above Average (3.00)
  • C (60-64%) – Average (2.50)
  • D+ (55-59%) – Pass (2.00)
  • D (50-54%) – Weak Pass (1.50)
  • F (Below 50%) – Fail (0.00)

Grade Point Average (GPA)

A student’s Grade Point Average (GPA) is determined by dividing the total grade points earned by the total credit hours attempted. This helps in evaluating students’ academic standing over time.

Classification of awards

ATU’s Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is used to classify students’ degrees into the following categories:

  • First Class (Honours) – CGPA 4.00 and above
  • Second Class Upper Division (Honours) – CGPA 3.00-3.99
  • Second Class Lower Division (Honours) – CGPA 2.00-2.99
  • Pass – CGPA 1.50-1.99
  • Fail – CGPA Below 1.50

The grading system aims to maintain academic excellence and fairness in evaluating student performance. ATU urges students to strive for excellence and make use of available academic resources to secure top classifications.
