Accra Technical University (ATU) has announced changes to the reopening dates for continuing, fresh Top-up, and Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Level 100 students. According to a notice from the Office of the Registrar, continuing and fresh Top-up students will now report on October 21, 2024. Meanwhile, fresh Level 100 students enrolled in BTech, Higher National Diploma (HND) 1, and Diploma 1 programmes are scheduled to resume on January 8, 2025.

The decision, which was made during an Academic Board meeting on September 20, 2024, has caused dissatisfaction among students. Many voiced their frustration, particularly about the delay for Level 100 students.
Some students expressed concerns about the financial burden of raising funds for tuition only to face delayed exams. “We can’t raise this huge amount of money then at the end of the day we begin to fail our exams,” said one student. Others questioned the reasons behind the postponement, saying, “Why is the school treating us like this?”
This shift in reopening dates has led to a disagreement between the university’s management and students, with many feeling misled about the original timeline.

I feel for those who work to pay their fees and those who come from far places to school….there will be a lot o f pressure on them to raise over 4k plus just to pay fees whiles we aren’t even done with our internships and yet we are expected to do that within a month.

Shouldn’t educational institutions consider the student body before taking decisions??? Expecting students to find at least GH¢1200( that’s like 60 % of the lesser fees) in less than a month is totally impossible. So if I want to apply for hostel also that means I should get about 4-6 thousand cedis by next month. From where?? Fido loan, quick credit, sportybet. Sometimes the more privileged at the top should consider some of us wai. Times are really hard. Internships are calling, fees, money for handouts and a whole lot. It’s literally impossible. Our voices must be heard. Please do something about it. Accra Technical University have sympathy wai. We’re humans. The Vice Chancellor,Dean,the big people at the top we beg you. The students body have to do strong demonstration including the new elected SRC, if the new elected SRC refuses to participate then we will all know that they are not there for us. This is hurting. And moreover if there is inadequate facilities, they should stop admitting students

Well, in my view only 1 single represents over 20, 000 students at Management level so you imagine the kind of pressure on one single person and even looking at the menace at hand we can only rant and end here, “they” are not ready to retract this. It’s hard for everyone. My advice, you can pay 60% of the academic year fees to be able to register for the semester and pay for an outside hostel instead since the university hostel won’t be favorable. On the other side, it’s just obvious but it’s well.

Per the reason they are giving us about the reopening date is not enough to convince us that they have done the right thing and that is the best option for them. I am enormously worried about the new resumption date for ATU student, this new reopening date will extremely affect most of us.
To begin with, many students will retard in paying of school fees due to the financial crisis they face in their various homes.
I can boldly confirm that not every student is feed with a golden spoon, unfortunately most student are dependent on their own self. So they hustle day and night in order to provide two square meal and also save some remaining money for their fees.
Instead of January 8th 2025 as long vacation for student to work in order to earn money and save to pay fees and other expenses as well. But then now management is saying our actual reopening date is 21st October 2024,Two weeks right after the attachment, mmmm it not easy there is a possibility that most student can drop out due to management current decision.
Upon all this , there has been an increment of fees at a rate of 25% that is not flavoring the student body at all. Management should only think about the profits that might be gain but they should analyze on the current economic situation in the country. This reopening date will cause lot of delay in fees paying and even pile up fund payment for almost every student.
There will be a detain in buying of new handouts for most of the student. The problem of education progress can’t be controlled if management doesn’t reconsider their decisions again.
It my humble request that management should rethink about their current decision made and also consider certain situations of the student body in general .

Some of us are stranded and need more time to relieve stress and refresh our minds so that we can prepare for the next semester very well. But we are not fortunate enough cause the early opening of the school will not favour us.
