A lawsuit filed by Opoku Y. Sarpong, a candidate for SRC Finance Officer at Accra Technical University (ATU), against Electoral Commission (EC) Chair Haruna Sulleman and outgoing SRC President Dawson Samuel, has postponed the SRC handover ceremony, which was meant to initiate the newly elected SRC president and executive team. Opoku’s legal action, addressing alleged election irregularities, has delayed the transition of leadership and left the student body concerned about starting the academic year without official SRC leadership.
In response, Honorable Bomboyie, the 2023/2024 GNUTS Ambassador at ATU, expressed urgency over the matter. During a discussion on the ATU Soso Agenda student forum, he directly appealed to Opoku, stating, “@Opoku, please, we beg. We want to hand over.”
The absence of SRC officials is causing worry among students as classes begin. “Academics have started, and if anything happens, there will be no SRC president,” one student noted. Another urged candidates who lost the election to accept the results and let the new leaders take on their roles, saying, “If you lose an election, take it like that and let someone else enjoy. Why drag the issue?”
ATU administrators and SRC officials are hopeful for a resolution in the coming days to allow the handover, bringing stability and leadership back to the student body as the semester progresses.
