WASSCE 2026: How to Calculate Your University Admission Aggregate

With the 2026 WASSCE results now released, many SHS graduates are preparing to apply to universities across Ghana. One of the first things students want to know is how their WASSCE aggregate is calculated.

How the WASSCE grades are scored

The grades are assigned points as follows:

A1 = 1 | B2 = 2 | B3 = 3 | C4 = 4 | C5 = 5 | C6 = 6 | D7 = 7 | E8 = 8 | F9 = 9

Remember: the lower the aggregate, the better the performance.

For example, if a student’s six relevant grades are:

• A1 = 1
• B2 = 2
• B3 = 3
• A1 = 1
• B2 = 2
• C4 = 4

The aggregate will be:

1 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 4 = 13

So, the student’s aggregate is 13.

But don’t calculate using just any six subjects

Students must be careful because universities and programmes may have different requirements regarding the subjects used for admission.

Your elective subjects are particularly important. A student may have a good aggregate but still not qualify for a particular programme if they do not have the required subjects or grades.

Students should therefore check the official admission requirements of their preferred university and programme before calculating their admission aggregate.

What about D7, E8 and F9?

D7 and E8 are passes under the WASSCE grading system, but many university programmes require credit passes from A1 to C6 in specific subjects.

F9 is a failure and may affect eligibility if the failed subject is required for the programme.

Aggregate does not guarantee admission

Having a good aggregate does not automatically guarantee admission.

Universities also consider:

• Required subjects
• Programme-specific requirements
• Available spaces
• Competition for the programme
• Cut-off points

Students should therefore avoid choosing a programme based on aggregate alone.

What students should do now

After checking their WASSCE results, applicants should:

1. Check all their grades.
2. Choose a programme that matches their subjects and interests.
3. Check the university’s current admission requirements.
4. Calculate their aggregate using the university’s approved method.
5. Compare with previous cut-off points where available.
6. Apply through the official admission channel before the deadline.
