The KNUST Student Activists (KSA) has raised concerns over the recent decision at the University of Ghana (UG), where the SRC Presidential race is set to go unopposed.
In a statement issued through its Policy and Governance Desk and written by the Leader of KNUST Student Activists, the group described the development as a possible sign of growing student apathy towards campus elections and student leadership.

KSA noted that UG SRC elections have traditionally been competitive, with several students contesting for leadership positions. The group believes the current situation should encourage stakeholders to look at why fewer students are becoming interested in student politics.
According to KSA, some of the reasons may include lack of trust in student leadership, the high cost of elections and the increasing personal attacks associated with campus politics.
The group also said students may lose interest when elected administrations fail to deliver on campaign promises or properly communicate their achievements to students.
KSA is therefore calling on SRCs, universities and student organisations to make campus elections more affordable, peaceful and focused on policies and student welfare.
The group also encouraged students to take a greater interest in student governance, stressing that SRCs play an important role in developing future leaders.
KNUST Student Activists warned that the situation at UG could happen at other universities, including KNUST and UCC, if student confidence and participation in campus elections continue to decline.
