The management of the University of Ghana has officially handed over five acres of land to the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG) to begin the construction of a modern, jointly-owned hostel facility.

The initiative, which is projected to accommodate more than 20,000 students, is being described as a historic milestone in student leadership and a bold response to the growing accommodation crisis on campus.
For years, access to affordable and adequate student housing has remained a major challenge at the university, with many students forced to rent in nearby communities at high costs. The new project is therefore expected to bring much-needed relief to both undergraduate and graduate students.
According to university officials, the partnership between the SRC, GRASAG, and the institution’s management highlights a new model of collaboration, where student leadership plays a direct role in addressing pressing needs of the student body.
Student leaders expressed optimism that the hostel facility will not only ease pressure on existing accommodations but also stand as a lasting legacy of proactive student governance at Ghana’s premier university.
