Accra Technical University (ATU), through its Women in Cybersecurity chapter, successfully hosted a hands-on cybersecurity training program titled “From Zero to Shield” on Thursday, August 29, 2025. The event, which took place at the ATU Auditorium from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, was held in collaboration with E-Crime Bureau and brought together students, industry professionals, and enthusiasts eager to expand their knowledge in the rapidly growing field of cybersecurity.

The workshop aimed at equipping participants with practical skills and insights into protecting digital systems and data in an increasingly connected world. It also highlighted the importance of fostering women’s participation in the cybersecurity industry, a sector where female representation remains relatively low.

The event featured a line-up of distinguished speakers who shared valuable expertise and experiences:

  • Prof. Nana Yaw Asabere, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science at ATU, delivered the opening address. He emphasized the need for institutions of higher learning to play a pivotal role in preparing students for the digital age. Prof. Asabere also encouraged participants to embrace continuous learning and innovation in the field of information security.

  • Eric Sower Badger, Senior Manager of Information Security Operations, provided participants with practical insights into real-world cyber threats and mitigation strategies. His session focused on the operational challenges faced by organizations and the tools used to defend against cyberattacks.

  • Prescott Ofori Nyamekye, a GI-KACE instructor, facilitated an interactive session where he demonstrated some core concepts of cybersecurity. His teaching style allowed students to engage in hands-on exercises, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

  • Zacciah Kwaku Adom-Oduro, a Certified Chief Information Security Professional (CISP), inspired participants with his wealth of industry experience. He stressed the importance of ethics, resilience, and continuous skill development in pursuing a career in cybersecurity.

Abena Attobrah-Bancram, Cyber Forensics Analyst, shared her expertise in digital forensics. With a professional focus on child online safety, she emphasized the importance of raising awareness to protect young people in the digital age. Abena, known for her dedication and innovative approach in dynamic cybersecurity environments, encouraged students to explore the human-centered aspects of information security

The collaboration with E-Crime Bureau, a leading cybersecurity and digital forensic firm in Ghana, provided participants with an opportunity to connect academic knowledge with industry practice. Representatives from E-Crime Bureau reaffirmed their commitment to supporting educational initiatives that empower young professionals, particularly women, to thrive in the cybersecurity ecosystem.

Students who attended the event described it as an eye-opening experience. Many highlighted that the practical demonstrations and expert advice gave them a clearer picture of how cybersecurity works in real-world settings.

Speaking after the program, the ATU Women in Cybersecurity leadership expressed gratitude to the speakers, E-Crime Bureau, and the university management for their support. They noted that “From Zero to Shield” is just the beginning of a series of initiatives aimed at building a strong cybersecurity community on campus and beyond.

As the digital world continues to evolve, initiatives like these position Accra Technical University as a hub for nurturing the next generation of cybersecurity experts who will contribute to safeguarding Ghana’s digital future.
