In a significant legal development, Abdul Gaffaar Marwan has won a court case filed against him by Opoku Y. Sarpong, an aspirant for the SRC Finance Officer position at Accra Technical University. The court ruled that the case lacked merit and dismissed it outright.
This legal dispute stemmed from allegations of irregularities in the recently conducted SRC elections. Mr. Opoku had earlier initiated the lawsuit against Marwan, the Electoral Commission Chair Haruna Sulleman, and outgoing SRC President Dawson Samuel. The case resulted in an injunction that delayed the SRC handover ceremony.
In its ruling, the court not only dismissed the allegations but also imposed a fine of ₵10,000 on Mr. Opoku for filing a baseless case. This decision has been widely viewed as a vindication of Marwan and the election processes.
The verdict paves the way for the smooth transition of leadership within the SRC, ensuring the newly elected executives can finally assume their duties. The ATU community is hopeful that this resolution will mark the beginning of a new chapter in student governance.
Students and stakeholders have expressed relief at the court’s decision, with many urging parties to focus on collaboration and progress for the university. Further updates on the upcoming SRC handover ceremony are expected to follow.
