Prospective university students in Ghana must meet specific academic requirements, including passing grades in core subjects. Unfortunately, students who receive a D7 in Core Mathematics do not meet the criteria for admission into most degree programs in Ghanaian universities.
Why Core Mathematics Matters
Core Mathematics is considered essential for academic success in higher education, irrespective of the program. As part of the minimum requirements for admission, universities require at least a C6 in all core subjects, which include:
- English Language
- Core Mathematics
- Integrated Science (or Social Studies)
A D7 grade is classified as a fail for the purposes of university entry, disqualifying students from admission to most degree programs.
Consequences of a D7 in Core Mathematics
- Disqualification for Degree Programs:
- Students with a D7 in Core Mathematics cannot apply to public or private universities in Ghana for degree programs.
- Alternative Options:
- Retake the WASSCE Core Mathematics exam through remedial classes to improve the grade to at least a C6.
- Consider diploma programs at technical universities or polytechnics, where requirements may be more flexible.
Academic Policy in Ghana
The policy ensures that students admitted to universities are well-prepared for academic rigor. The National Accreditation Board (NAB) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) enforce these standards, leaving little room for exceptions.
Advice for Affected Students
Students who receive a D7 in Core Mathematics are encouraged to pursue remedial courses and retake the WASSCE. Improving the grade will not only open doors to higher education but also prepare them better for academic challenges.
For more information, visit the official websites of WAEC and the respective universities to confirm their admission requirements.
